Celebrate Minnesota 1990 was a one year statewide program of community improvement, arts, and environmental and recreational events. Established by the Legislature [Laws 1988 c686 art2], the program was designed to create community pride, encourage environmental cleanup and beautification, promote preservation of the diverse roots of Minnesotans, and create activities which would help communities prepare for the next century. The law also established a matching grant program for community improvements and clean-up. Celebrate Minnesota 1990's executive director reported to the Commissioner of Trade and Economic Development and an eleven-member advisory committee appointed by the governor. By the end of its yearlong existence, 586 communities, neighborhoods, and organizations had participated in the program, with 182 receiving grant funds for projects ranging from building restoration to tree planting to riverbank clean-up.
