Mitra, Sandeep.
Dr. Sandeep Mitra immigrated to the United States in 1987 to pursue doctoral research. He attended SUNY Binghamton on an IBM-supported graduate assistantship, graduating in 1995. In 1994, he began teaching computer science at SUNY Brockport, but felt there was a "disconnect between academia and commercial/real world applications in software engineering." In 1999, he took a two-year leave of absence from teaching to work for Questra Corporation, a software development firm located in Brighton, New York. There, he developed a digital software product which won a citation from Kodak: "Easy Print Software" a driver for large format 3000 series inkjet printers. Kodak has deployed this product at various commercial printing shops.
In 2001, Dr. Mitra returned to SUNY Brockport, having gained practical knowledge and connections in the software engineering world, which he now uses to better prepare his students. He is currently a consultant with ArchSynergy, Ltd., a start-up software company. In September 2003, ArchSynergy's President Tom Bullinger, purchased licensing of a commercial inventory control and business process management software program (through SUNY Research Foundation) created by Dr. Mitra and some of his students: Brenden Steltz, Jude Eichas, Kevin Poppenberg, and Stephen Sirianni.
The program was created for the India Market/Video Store at Win-Jeff Plaza in Henrietta, and provides a business process automation facility for "mom and pop" businesses. Dr. Mitra described his program as being applicable to many retail businesses, including car rental, party supplies, etc. This software is the first created by SUNY Brockport students to be licensed and used commercially.
Dr. Mitra is active in the Bengali Association of Rochester, Inc., a 501C3 social/cultural organization with sixty dues-paying members. His wife, Lilly, serves on the Board of Directors. This group is affiliated with the India Community Center and uses the center for meetings and special events. Dr. Mitra is interested in Indian culture and literature, and created a web page devoted to Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). Tagore, Nobel laureate for literature (1913), was one of modern India's greatest poets and the composer of independent India's national anthem. Dr. Mitra indicated that he is raising his son, Samik with traditional Indian values and culture, and that his wife, Lilly, often wears traditional Indian dresses.
