The American Recorder Society was founded in 1939 in New York City by Suzanne Bloch, Margaret Bradford, and Irmgard Lehrer. Its aim was to provide a meeting place for recorder players in order to stimulate and improve the appreciation and playing of recorder music. Eventually chapters were formed in other cities, and the Society began publishing editions of recorder music. Today, the headquarters of the Society is in Saint Louis, MO.
