Theatre faculty member James F. Coakley joined Northwestern University as Assistant Professor of Theatre in 1971. He received a Ph.D. from Northwestern in 1964, title of his thesis being "The Comic World of Eugene Ionesco: A Study in Dramatic Technique". He performed in "Long Day's Journey Into Night" as a student at Northwestern in 1963.
Coakley held appointments at Loyola University of Chicago, the Goodman Theatre, and University of Michigan before returning to Northwestern in 1971 as Assistant Professor of Theatre. He taught numerous classes at Northwestern, and was involved annually with theatre productions. He also was involved with the Curtain Guild (Loyola University of Chicago) and the University of Michigan Players, in the 1960s and early 1970s.
