Grimes, Nikki
Nikki Grimes was born October 20, 1950, in Harlem, NY. She writes under her own name and under the pseudonym Naomi McMillan. She has had a number of jobs related to writing, teaching, and publishing, including a six year period in Sweden as a radio scriptwriter and producer, and is also a prolific writer for young people. She has received a number of awards and honors for her work. Grimes draws upon her own childhood to convey the black experience and themes such as friendship, tolerance, family and community relationships, and adolescence. Her works generally feature young African American characters with whom children and young adults can identify.
