Hermann Kanzler (1822-1888), German general of the pontifical army, was born in Weingarten, Baden. He did his licentiate studies at Mannheim and then entered the military college of Karlsruhe. In 1841, however, he renounced his military career and dedicated himself to the study of languages and travel. In 1845 he placed himself at the service of the pope and offered to help organize a pontifical army. In the same year he was admitted to service of the Holy See in Bologna. Prepared in military science and equipped with good organizational skills, he, along with his regiment, earned a special commendation from General Durando. Kanzler was promoted to lieutenant in 1849 and to captain a few months later. By 1859 he had been promoted to the rank of colonel; six years later he was made a general.
