Born in Tampa, Florida, Gilbert F. Casellas majored in Latin American Studies at Yale and later attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School. While practicing law at a Philadelphia law firm, Casellas helped to form and was elected president of the Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania. Later, he became the President of the Hispanic National Bar Association. In 1994, he was appointed by President Clinton to serve as Chairman of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Mr. Casellas was also appointed by President Clinton to serve on the Census Monitoring Board for the Census 2000. After leaving the EEOC, Mr. Casellas became a partner in the Washington office of the largest Hispanic-owned law firm. He went on to serve as the President and Chief Operating Officer of The Swarthmore Group, and was later elected as a Director of Prudential Financial. Mr. Casellas is on the Board of Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania.
