Hide Profile

Ann Elizabeth (Baltzley) Hartshorn Potter was born in Ohio in 1838. She attended the Hillside Family School in Amherst, N.H.; despite her fund-raising efforts, the school closed. She then married the former headmaster, Edward B. Hartshorn, and they moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Internal Revenue and also painted portraits. Edward Hartshorn died in the late 1860s, and in 1872 she married Henry Green Potter, a lawyer who became chief of the Mineral Division, Department of the Interior. Their only child Pearl, born in 1875, married Edwin H. Etz, an optometrist, in 1909; they had one daughter, Constance Potter Etz.
