John W. Egerton served as editor of the University of South Florida News Bureau during the early years of the institution. This collection includes materials gathered by Egerton during the Johns Committee's investigation of USF's administrators, faculty, and students between 1962 and 1964. After leaving the university in 1965, Egerton left the Tampa Bay area and wrote for the Southern Education Report. He has published numerous articles and monographs about the culture of the New South, including A Mind to Stay Here: Profiles from the South (1970) and The Americanization of Dixie: The Southernization of America (1974).

John Egerton was born in Atlanta, Ga., June 14, 1935. He was a free-lance reporter and author of several books, and did extensive research on civil rights, labor relations, education reform, Southern history and Southern food.
