Leonard Gilchrist Wilson was born on June 11, 1928 in Orillia, Ontario, Canada. He earned his B.A. in biology from the University of Toronto in 1949, his M.Sc. from the University of London in 1955 and his Ph.D. in 1958 from the University of Wisconsin. From 1958-1959 he was a visiting instructor in the department of history at the University of California. In 1959, he accepted a position as an assistant professor in history at Cornell University and after one year, he joined the faculty at Yale University School of Medicine as an assistant professor (1960-1965) and associate professor (1965-1967) in the department of history of science and medicine.

In 1967, Dr. Wilson came to the University of Minnesota as professor and head of the newly established department of the history of medicine. He was a member of the American Association for the History of Medicine and the History of Science Society. Dr. Wilson retired from the University as professor emeritus in 2001.
