The Kentucky General Assembly established the Kentucky Sesquicentennial Commission in 1938 to prepare for the 150th anniversary of Kentucky's statehood, which was to occur in 1942. Public funds were not appropriated for the purpose. Governor Keen Johnson appointed the members of the commission in 1940, and Samuel M. Wilson was appointed chairman. The commission, in conjunction with local committees, planned pageants, parades, poetry contests and other events to celebrate the anniversary.
