Alexander Monro, primus (1697-1767), physician, was born in London on 8 September 1697. He attended Edinburgh University, 1710-1713, before studying in London, Paris and Leyden. He was appointed Professor of Anatomy at Edinburgh University in 1720, and published his major work, Osteology, a treatise on the anatomy of the human bones, in 1726. Monro retired from his professorship in 1758, and died in Edinburgh on 10 July 1767.
