Peter J. Anderson served as historian and assistant director of the Byrd Polar Research Center at The Ohio State University from 1974 until 1992. In addition, he served as secretary of The American Polar Society and editor of The Polar Times from 1989 until 1992. From September 1973 until February 1974 he was a consultant with the Division of Polar Programs, and Program Manager, RANN Directorate, National Science Foundation and was executive secretary of the Interagency Arctic Research Coordinating Committee, in Washington, D.C.

Anderson was a member of the U.S. Air Force from December 1963 until August 1973. He held assignments in survival training, public affairs, was a member of the USAF battle staff (Pentagon) as technical editor of Antarctic Journal of the United States and was founding editor of Arctic Bulletin . After 1973, he was a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve with the rank of Lt. Colonel. His reserve service was in the Office of Air Force History.

Peter Anderson was born circa 1940 in Superior, Wisconsin. He received a B.A. degree from Seton Hall University in 1963 and an M.S. degree from American University in 1972. He also pursued Ph. D. studies in history at The Ohio State University. He was a member of the publications committee of the Arctic Institute of North America in 1976-1978 and was on the editorial board of The Journal of Polar Studies from 1983 to 1992. He was a member of the organizing committee for the "Sixth Gondwana Symposium" held in Columbus, Ohio in August, 1985 and served on the planning committee for "The Twelfth Northern Libraries Colloquy" in Boulder, Colorado in June 1988. Anderson was a visiting faculty member at Hamline University's Antarctica Institute in 1988 and was an exhibit consultant for "The Science Museum of Minnesota" from 1988 to 1992.

Peter Anderson published a number of articles related to polar studies. His publications included the following: "Richard Evelyn Byrd--Polar Explorer," The Iron Worker Magazine ; "The Other Richard E. Byrd: Naval Officer," The Retired Officer ; "Antarctic Support," Naval Aviation News. His articles appeared in Antarctic Journal of the United States ; Naval Aviation News ; and articles in World Book Encyclopedia ; Britannica and other encyclopedias. Presentations related to Admiral Byrd and Antarctic Aviation were given by Anderson at a technical information conference in St. Louis in 1972, The Antarctica Society, 1979 and 1988; and the Office of Air Force History, 1989.
