The State Office of Affirmative Action was established in 1983 within the Executive Office for Administration and Finance to collaborate with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination in enforcing the Governor's Code of Fair Practices (Exec Order 74, July 20, 1970; Exec Order 227, Feb 25, 1983) as it pertains to employment within the Executive Department without regard to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, language, sex, age, or handicap, and related equal opportunity and affirmative action policies. Also established was a Governor's Advisory Council for (the State Office of) Affirmative Action (Exec Order 236, Dec 7, 1983)
