A Professor at Indiana University from 1954 until his retirement in 1997, Terence (Terry) J. Martin was a highly productive and award-winning scholar and dedicated teacher with an interest in both history and American Literature. He possessed degrees in both History (B.A. John Carroll, 1949 ) and English (M.A., Ohio State, 1950, Ph.D., Ohio State, 1954 ). Martin’s scholarship on American Literature focuses primarily, although not exclusively, on 19th Century American authors, such as James Fenimore Cooper and Nathaniel Hawthorne, and is particularly noteworthy for its focus both on the use of negation as a method of description in American literature and a study of the meaning of beginnings. His writings include many articles on these subjects, as well as the monographs The Instructed Vision and Parables of Possibility.

In the course of his academic career, Professor Martin also served as a visiting professor at a diverse set of institutions in addition to Indiana, including California, Hawaii, the University of Dijon in France, Hyderabad University in India, and the Universities of Mainz, Frankfurt, and the Free University of Berlin in Germany. He has been heavily active in both the undergraduate and graduate fields, having taught every undergraduate course in American Literature at Indiana and also directed nearly fifty Ph.D. dissertations. In 1984, Indiana University bestowed one of its highest honors on Dr. Martin, naming him a Distinguished Professor.

Professor Martin also served as a consultant for several organizations, including the Fulbright Committee from 1978-1981. He was also a fellowship judge for both the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Humanities Center in the 1980s and a member of the editorial boards for both American Literature and Nineteenth-Century Literature. At Indiana University, Professor Martin served on many committees, including the promotion, tenure, and recruitment committees, and was Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for two years in the 1960s. Professor Martin was also a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies, and a Fellow of the Indiana University Institute for Advanced Study in addition to other awards.
