P.S. Shearer received his B.S. (1912) and M.S. (1928) in Animal Science from Iowa State College (University). After a brief time at the University of Nebraska, Shearer returned to Iowa State as an Assistant Professor (1913-1915), Associate Professor (1915-1919), and Professor (1919-1978) in Animal Husbandry, and also served as Dept. Head (1935-1954). Shearer was considered to be a leading judge of beef cattle in the U.S. and is credited with the founding of Iowa State's livestock judging competition, the Little International (now known as the Little North American). He belonged to numerous honorary and professional societies, and was named to Iowa State University's Block and Bridle Hall of Fame (1974).
