Hildebrandt was a German art historian who specialized in avant-garde art and architecture, and who was actively involved in European artistic circles. His books include: "Oskar Schlemmer" (1952), "Die Frau als Kunstlerin" (1928), "Die Kunst des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts" (ca. 1924) and "Die Architektur bei Albrecht Altdorfer" (ca. 1908). He and his wife, the painter Lily Hildebrandt, had close relationships with many German painters and architects, particularly Walter Gropius, Oskar Schlemmer, Adolf Hölzel, Willi Baumeister and Hannah Höch.
