Edith Vanessa Buchanan was born in Barton, Vermont on December 31, 1883, the daughter of Edgar M. and Nellie (Evans) Buchanan. By 1900, the family had moved to Lebanon, New Hampshire. On June 30, 1902, Vanessa Buchanan married Austen Isaac Blake (1880-1936). They had one son, Clifton, born May 15, 1903 in Lowell, Vermont. By 1909, Vanessa and Austen were divorced. Vanessa then married Daniel Morgan Hufnail (1876-1926) on December 25, 1909 in Claremont, New Hampshire. Daniel was a farmer in Reading, Vermont. They had one son, Daniel Buchanan Hufnail, born November 3, 1910, in Reading, Vermont. After the death of Daniel M. Hufnail in 1926, Vanessa continued running the farm with the help of Roy R. Hall (1899-1993). Roy became interested in competitive trail riding and won the Green Mountain Horse Association 100 mile ride several times. E. Vanessa Hufnail died January 4, 1976, in Springfield, Vermont.
Vanessa had one brother, Charles Evans Buchanan, born May 5, 1881 in Barton, Vermont. He graduated from medical school at the University of Vermont in 1907 and opened his first practice in Barnard, Vermont. He also practiced medicine in Rockland, Maine and Reading, Vermont. In March, 1926, he moved his practice to Claremont, New Hampshire. He married Claire Violet White on January 9, 1930 in Reading, Vermont. Charles died on March 23, 1943 at his sister's farm in Reading, Vermont.
