Marguerite Heinsch Ephron was born in Hastings, Minnesota, in 1910 and was raised in Deer Lodge, Montana. She attended high school in Butte, Montana. Ephron earned a degree in Latin at the University of Montana-Missoula in 1931 and then studied at the University of Chicago. While at Chicago that she met her husband, Henry Ephron, who was also a classical scholar and later an expert cryptographer.

Ephron returned to Montana to teach classics at the University of Montana from 1935 to 1975. She also helped start the liberal studies degree program. Ephron died in 1999.
