Norton, William D.
Variant namesWilliam Norton left Massachusetts for California in 1849 on the ship "Argonaut." He first settled in Maxwell's Creek (also called Coulterville), Mariposa County, and later moved to Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne County. Norton returned to Massachusetts in 1855. With the money he earned in California, he started the Norton Clasp Shoe Company. Norton was a member of the Society of California Pioneers of New England. He died in 1908 at the age of 76.

Norton was a writer and wrote screenplays for several movies including "Scalphunters," "Hunting Party" and "The MacKenzie Break." Norton was a communist for a number of years and was called to appear before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1959. He wrote and published short stories and a few articles on labor and social reform.
