William Gilmore Leaman, Jr. was born on 3 September 1898 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His study at the University of Pennsylvania was interrupted by his service in the First World War as part of the forces assigned to Base Hospital No. 20. He graduated from the University's Medical School in 1922.
While at the University of Pennsylvania, Leaman was president of the La Place Society as well as a member of the Phi Beta Pi fraternity and the John C. Heisler Anatomical Society. After his graduation, Leaman worked at the Southeastern Dispensary for the Diseases of Women and in 1929 took classes in internal medicine at Harvard Medical School. He later served as a professor at the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania from 1932 to 1963 and practiced cardiology at Philadelphia General Hospital and a number of other area hospitals. He died in 1973 in Unionville, Pennsylvania.
