Cutting was a folklorist and high school English teacher in Johnson City, New York. Edith Cutting was born March 31, 1918 at Elizabethtown, New York. She graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1933, and from the New York State College for Teachers at Albany in 1938, where she received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Librarianship. She held numerous positions as librarian or English teacher, or both until her retirement in 1975. In 1941 she began work at Cornell University towards a Masters' degree, completing it in the summer of 1945.
