Tunnel Coal Company.
The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.
(Cont.) The Tunnel Coal Company was incorporated on September 12, 1902 in Birmingham, Alabama. The following year the Company took possession of the coal fields of the Alabama State Land Company. In 1904, the Central of Georgia Railway was the leading stockholder in the Tunnel Coal Company. This influenced the Company to move its corporate headquarters from Birmingham, Alabama to Savannah, Georgia.
(Cont.) In 1905, the Central of Georgia Railway Company purchased and absorbed the Tunnel Coal Company, and its assets into the Central system.
