The Association of Colleges and Universities of the State of New York (ACUSNY) was founded in 1906 with headquarters in Albany.
For its first 50 years, ACUSNY functioned to represent higher education on specific legislation and executive decisions before the NYS Legislature and Executive. In 1956 ACUSNY's private institutions were organized as the constituency of the Commission for Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU), which functioned until 1972 as an integral part of ACUSNY; CICU is now the advocacy organization for independent institutions. ACUSNY's present membership includes the State University of New York, the City University of New York, independent colleges and universities, and proprietary colleges authorized by the NYS Board of Regents to confer degrees. ACUSNY serves as an information clearinghouse and forum on educational legislation and also sponsors, conducts, and cooperates in programs for the improvement and advancement of higher education in New York State. Some of the major projects with which ACUSNY has been involved include the organization of the "emergency colleges" for veterans after World War II, the expansion and improvement of the state's student financial aid programs, improvement of educational opportunities for the disadvantages, and the establishment of state aid for private colleges. The records illustrate the divergent interests of public and private colleges and universities toward the use of public funds, particularly after the creation of the State University of New York in 1948 and its expansion in the 1960s.
