Mary Jane "Jennie" Smith is the eldest daughter of Rowland & Margaret Smith born in 1860. She was 19 years old when the family left Locke Haven, PA on their cross country journey arriving in Portland, OR in 1879. The party included her sisters, brother and parents. They eventually settled in Winlock, WA where Rowland homesteaded and joined the Winlock lumber mill. His homestead stayed in the family for generations. All five daughters taught school in Lewis County, WA at one time or another during their teaching careers. Jennie Smith taught school in various places in Lewis County including Pe Ell and the State Training school. About 1887 or 1888 she married William Sargent, a Canadian, and settled in St. Urban, WA where there was a Sargent Road. Their daughter was born in 1889. Mr. Sargent passed away in 1890. Jennie Smith Sargent passed away in 1934.
