John Cowles Cooper was born in Durham, Connecticut in 1801. In 1823 he bought a farm in Valley of Sandy Creek near Adams, N.Y. On September 15, 1824 John married Elvira and they had nine children; five lived until adulthood. They were Geraldine (married to General Bradley Winslow); Milissa (married to U.S. Gilbert); Levi; Adelaide (married to Jean R. Stebbens); and Dealton. John C. Cooper was a successful farmer devoted to sheep culture, raising wool and slaughtering sheep. In 1853 he organized and became president of the Agricultural Insurance Company. John and his partner, Philander Smith introduced and sold Wood's mower and reaper. John was successful in his business, and continued to work for the Agricultural I.

John was successful in his business, and continued to work for the Agricultural Insurance Co. until his death on January 26, 1877 at 76 years old. Dealton Cooper enlisted at 19 years old, as a private in Co. B of the 10th Regiment Artillery of N.Y. He was promoted to Sergeant and eventually to second lieutenant. Levi Cooper managed a farm. John's son-in-law, Bradley Winslow, was a successful lawyer and colonel in the 186th Regiment.
