Gudbrand J. Lomen (1850-1934), an attorney in Minnesota, joined the Gold Rush to Nome in 1900 and subsequently established several businesses with his five sons, including the raising and processing of reindeer meat. His son Carl (1880-1965) worked so energetically in the reindeer industry promoting marketing throughout the United States, that he became known as "the Reindeer King." Two sons, Ralph and Alfred, became Territorial Legislators. The father also held public office. He served as mayor of Nome (1917-1919), as U.S. District Attorney (1918-1919) and as U.S. District Judge (1921-1929). He also served as Norwegian Consul (1919-1929). His business interests in the reindeer industry were ultimately frustrated by the U.S. Government's purchase of herds not held by Alaskan Natives.
