Biographical note: William W. Byers was born in Illinois in 1859 and later raised by an uncle in Leavenworth, Kansas. He worked for several cattle ranches in Arizona and was once reported dead following an attack on the Newman Clanton party at Guadalupe Canyon in 1881. He studied law in Leavenworth, was married to Minnie Harrison in 1883, and had six children. He served as undersheriff of Leavenworth County before moving to Dolores, Colorado where he died in 1949.
