Manfred Leslie Karnovsky, 1918-1999, PhD, 1946, University of Capetown, came to Harvard Medical School in 1948 as a Research Fellow in the Department of Biological Chemistry; he was named Harold T. White Professor of Biological Chemistry in 1965 and Emeritus in 1989. Karnovsky's research focused on the biochemistry and physiology of sleep, lipid metabolism, microbiocidal mechanisms in leukocytes, and phagocytes.
