Marion Hengerer Hollister attended public high school in Buffalo, New York, and New York City, the Horace Mann School (1911-1912) and the Veltin School on (1912-1913). Although never graduating, Hollister took classes at Radcliffe College from 1921-1926: George Lyman Kittredge's Shakespeare course, 1921-1922; English Composition, 1922-1923 (dropped out due to difficult pregnancy); a Bible course with Kirsopp Lake, 1925-1926; and an English Poets course with John Livingston Lowes, 1925-1926. In 1926, she and her family moved from Brookline, Massachusetts, to New Rochelle, New York. Hollister eventually divorced her husband and married J. Cheney Wells, co-founder of Old Sturbridge Village.
