David Savage spent his entire life in rural Henry County, Iowa. At a young age he developed an interest in ornithology, inspired by his cousin William Savage. He attended Whittier College and at age 17 he began editing the Iowa Ornithological Association's publication, The Iowa Ornithologist, for its entire run (4 years). Later in life he concentrated on new farming techniques and seems to have abandoned his interest in birds.
