Virginia. Railroad Commissioner

An act of the General Assembly creating the position of railroad commissioner for the state, and to define his duties, was approved March 31, 1877. The commissioner was elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly and he was authorized a clerk. He was responsible for the general supervision of all railroads in the state, with regard to the physical condition, manner in which they were operated, security and accommodation of the public, and compliance with their corporation charters. The Commissioner was reponsible for investigating complaints and accidents. Salaries, office rent, and travel expenses were apportioned among the corporation owning the railroads.
