Ellis is widely published on rumor-panics and his papers have appeared in publications like Western Folklore and the Journal of Psychology and Theology; and have been presented at conferences held by the American Folklore Society and the Fortean Society. He edited FOAFTale News, the newsletter of the International Society for Contemporary Legend Research (ISCLR), from 1988 to 1994, and served as President of the same society from 1995 to 1999.
