Sherwin Markman was born in Des Moines, Iowa on January 19, 1929. He earned his B.A. Magna Cum Laude from State University of Iowa in 1949 and his J.D. from Yale University Law School in 1952. After graduation, Markman began working at the law firm Brody, Charlton, Parker and Roberts in Des Moines. He advanced from associate, to junior, and then senior partner between 1952 and 1965. During this time, he was active within the community of Des Moines and in the Iowa Democratic Party. He served as the state president of the Young Democrats of Iowa between 1955 and 1957. He was the chairman of the Des Moines Planning and Zoning Commission between 1957 and 1965, as well as state executive director for Governor Adlai Stevenson¿s Presidential Campaign in 1956, and State Chairman of ¿Citizen s for Hughes¿. Markman also served as an Iowa state delegate for the Democratic National Convention in the years 1956 and 1960, and served on the Credentials Committee of the Democratic National Convention in 1964. In May 1965, Markman began his career with the Federal government when he accepted the position of deputy director of the Congressional Liaison Office at the Agency for International Development (AID) under the Department of State. He held this position until January 1966, when he began his position as assistant to President Lyndon B. Johnson. At the White House, he worked primarily under Marvin Watson as a congressional liaison to the House of Representatives. Tasks he fulfilled, in addition to those served as a Congressional Liaison, included completing and reporting on ¿Ghetto Trips¿ from 1966 to 1967, and planning Presidential travel. Notably, he also planned the Glassboro summit meeting between President Johnson and Premier Aleksei Kosygin, held June 23 to 25, 1967. He left his position at the White House in September 1968.
