The redesign of Quincy Square was commissioned by the Cambridge Arts Council and dedicated in October 1997. It is located east of Harvard Square, at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue, Harvard Street, and Quincy Street. At one-time, the half-acre lot was used for bus parking. The park now includes fieldstones with bronze inlays, a wrought-iron fence, pavings, and plantings. It is named after Josiah Quincy, a graduate of Harvard College (1790), United States Congressman (1805-1813), Massachusetts senator and representative (1814-1820), and Mayor of Boston (1823-1828). In 1829, Quincy became the fifteenth president of Harvard University, retiring in 1845. He died on July 2, 1864.
