Pennsylvania State University. Depts. of Military Science.
Military instruction began at Penn State in 1865 as a replacement for mandatory manual labor. A Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program was created at Penn State circa 1916. Military training was required of all freshman and sophomore male students until 1964, when it became an elective.
