Avery B. Cain (1840-1879) of Rutland, Vt., was commissioned 2nd lieutenant of the 4th U.S. Infantry in 1861, was promoted to 1st lieutenant in 1863, was named captain and brevet major in 1864 and 1865 for gallant and meritorious service.
