Biographical note: Pioneer merchant family; Jacob and Mamie Levy opened the first store, the Red Star General Store, in Douglas, Ariz. in 1903; by 1912, it was the Levy Brothers Dry Goods Company. In 1919, a second store, the El Pasco Store opened, and in 1925, the Fair Store was opened in Bisbee. By 1935, Jacob Levy and his sons, Aaron and Leon, moved to Tucson and opened Levy's. The other stores were operated by Jacob's brother, Ben and his sons. Leon became president of Levy's in 1958. In addition to managing the store, Leon Levy was a member of the Arizona Board of Regents, 1960-1968, and headed the fund drive for the Cancer Research Center in 1984. He served on the boards of First National, First Interstate, and Southern Arizona banks, was a founding member of the Tucson Conquistadors, and a trustee for the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.
