William E. Wiatt was born in Gloucester County, Va. He taught school in Kentucky and Alabama, then moved back to Gloucester County. Served as a Baptist minister and chaplain of 26th Virginia Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. After the war, he was minister, schoolteacher and county surveyor. Was a missionary in the mountains of Virginia.
