Margaret Oldenburg was born in Carlton, Minnesota in 1892. She received a B.A. from Vassar College, as well as a B.S. in Education from the University of Minnesota. She spent several years teaching in various high schools in Minnesota before earning a B.S. in Library Science from the University of Minnesota. Oldenburg served as a catalog librarian at Walter Library at the University of Minnesota from 1929-1939. She resigned in 1939 and moved to Grand Marais, Minnesota. She spent the following decades travelling extensively, mostly in northern Canada. During her travels, she collected botany specimans for the University's Botany Department, as well as Native American art, and wrote extensive letters to her friends and family. Margaret Oldenburg died in 1972.

Margaret Oldenburg was born June 27, 1892 in Carlton, Minnesota. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College in 1915 and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Minnesota in Education (1921) and Library Science (1929).
After teaching at several Minnesota high schools (1918-1928) and earning degrees from the University of Minnesota, Ms. Oldenburg accepted a position as a cataloger with the University of Minnesota Libraries in 1929. She resigned from her position with University Libraries in 1939 and relocated to Grand Marais, Minnesota. From the late 1930s to the mid-1950s, Ms. Oldenburg undertook several expeditions to the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and numerous destinations along the arctic coastline. She collaborated with the University of Minnesota’s Department of Botany collecting botanical specimens during her expeditions and donating them to the department.
The Overseas Operations Division of the National Weather Service presented Ms. Oldenburg with a certificate of appreciation in 1969 recognizing her donations of books to weather stations in the Arctic.
Margaret Oldenburg died August 21, 1972 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
