Teeter, Robert M., 1939-
Variant namesRobert M. Teeter was born on February 5, 1939 in Coldwater, Michigan. He received a B.A. from Albion College in 1961, and an M.A. from Michigan State University in 1964. He was a Graduate Assistant at Albion College from 1961 to 1964, and an instructor at Albion College from 1964 to 1966. Since 1967 he has worked for Market Opinion Research Corporation in Detroit, Michigan, serving as Executive Vice President from 1973 to 1979, and President since 1979. Market Opinion Research is a Detroit consumer research firm that for years has undertaken survey research for Republican political candidates. In late 1971 and 1972, Teeter worked for the Committee for the Re-election of the President (CREEP) during Richard Nixon's 1972 campaign, and similar activities during the Ford administration. In 1975, Teeter established a political reference point for the President Ford Committee, to clarify strategies for the fall campaign. He played a key role in preparing President Ford for his three debates with Jimmy Carter. Making use of new computerized polling technology, he provided President Ford's advisers with instantaneous reactions to the debates by sampling Seattle voters. He plotted the summary reaction over videotapes of the debate, allowing the presidential advisers to judge Ford's substantive comments and delivery, and adjust his performance accordingly. Teeter was also a strategist and poll taker for President George H.W. Bush in 1989.
