John Muncy, known as Irvin, (1871-1949) was born in Dowagiac (Mich.) He worked in logging camps in the late 1880s. He attended school at the Flint "Academy", Ferris Institute, and Michigan Normal School (now Central Michigan University), graduating in 1899. He taught at several schools in Grand Traverse County and Cedar (Mich.) In 1904 he switched careers and began servicing automobiles. He later became Chief Engineer at Studebaker. He co-designed the Liberty Engine for U.S. military aircraft. He married Maud Ione Ackley in April 1900. They had three children and divorced in 1923. Maud (1873-1969) was born in DeWitt Township (Clinton County, Mich.). She attended Normal School at Boyne Falls and graduated from Central Normal School (1899). She taught at Cross Village and Goodhart in Emmet County (Mich.) prior to attending CNS. (Information from the collection.).
