Born on October 16, 1807, John V. Breeding migrated to Texas from Virginia with his parents in February 1833. He served in the Texas Army under Sam Houston in the San Jacinto Campaign, although he did not fight in the battle. The first sheriff of Fayette County, Breeding resided in the county for the remainder of his life. He married Louisa Parks Ware on February 10, 1842, and had eight children. Breeding died in 1869 and was buried in the family cemetery near Fayetteville, Texas.
