Dr. George H. Tichenor was a native of Kentucky; he moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1859. Sometime prior to the Civil War he resided in Liberty, Mississippi. He joined a Confederate unit, the Williamson County "Dare Devils," June 6, 1861. In May of 1862 the company reorganized and he was elected orderly sergeant of Company B, 2nd Tennessee Cavalry. He was commissioned recruiting officer on January 8, 1863. Later in 1863 he was appointed acting assistant surgeon.
Wounded in battle near Memphis, Tennessee, he is said to have developed an antiseptic formula as a result of experiments made upon himself. Soon after the war he practiced medicine in Louisiana. He received a patent for his antiseptic in 1883, and began marketing the product in 1885. A prominent veteran, he served as Commander of Camp no. 9, Confederate Veterans' Cavalry, and was appointed Surgeon General under Gen. Lombard of the Louisiana Division, United Confederate Veterans Association.
