Bayers, Lloyd H. (Kinky), 1911-1968,

Hide Profile

Lloyd H. "Kinky" Bayers was born July 6, 1911, in Juneau to Vera Soboleff Bayers and Harry "Tay Bayers" of Juneau. Seaman, captain, political activist, marine historian, and collector, he worked as a deckhand on the mail boat "Estebeth," for the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Co., purchased the "M.V. Forester" for towing, freighting and charter work, became captain of the fish packer "Pelican," and joined the U.S. Army Transport Service in 1941. After the war, he worked for the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey as master of the vessel "Watres," transporting survey personnel in southeast Alaska. Captain Bayers was well known in Juneau and an activist on many local issues, often representing the underdog position. He was a major participant in discussions of local topics and controversy held at Taguchi's City Cafe in Juneau, known as the unofficial city council. The source of Kinky's nickname is uncertain but historian Robert DeArmond believed it was his contentious nature and involvement in controversial issues. Kinky Bayers never married; he retired in 1967 and died of a heart attack March 5, 1968. [Information from MS 10 and Robert N. DeArmond].
