Terrell, Adam Thompson.
Elijah Lovejoy moved his abolitionist newspaper, the Observer, from St. Louis to Alton, Ill. after a pro-slavery mob destroyed his press. The press of the Alton Observer was subsequently destroyed four more times, leading to an armed riot, 7 Nov. 1837, that resulted in Lovejoy's death.
