In 1920, the Dramatic Club of Davidson College produced its first performance, "Wildcat Minstrels," under the direction of Professor Edward J. Erwin. In 1929, the Dramatic Club was reorganized as the Red and Black Masquers and in 1959 the name changed to the Vababonds. In 1963 the Department of Drama and Speech was established. In 1980 the name was changed to Theatre Department. The Drama Department sponsored a Summer Playhouse which grew into the Davidson Community Players and the department continues to produce a Children's Theatre Workshop.
