William Herbert was working to augment Typographical antiquities, or, an historical account of the origin and progress of printing in Great Britain and Ireland, originally undertaken by Joseph Ames, fellow and secretary of the Royal Society of Antiquaries. William White may have been related to Benjamin White, one of the booksellers who sponsored the work. The three volumes appeared between 1785 and 1790.
