The Archives and Records Division of the Dept. of Archives and History was created in 1983. The division combined the activities of records appraisal and scheduling that had previously been conducted by the Records Management Division with the activities of arrangement and description. The division was under the direction of Richard Cox during most of its three year existence. In 1986 the division was dismantled. The re-established Records Management Division took over the appraisal and scheduling functions. All processing activities for both private manuscript collections and government records were placed under the newly created Arrangement and Description Division.
