Warren E. Sawyer of Monona Iowa, enlisted in the Regular Army on Feb. 26, 1862 at Dubuque, Iowa, and soon was mustered in the 16th U.S. Infantry Regiment, Co. H. After three months of training at Camp Thomas, near Columbus, Ohio, he joined his regiment by June 1862 near Florence, Alabama. Sawyer took part in Buell's pursuit of Bragg and the advance on Murfreesboro, Tenn. He died on Jan. 31, 1863 of wounds sustained at the battle of Stone's River.
